Scientists have developed a new type of smartphone-based portable ultrasound machine that can help easily detect cancer at home.
The smartphone ultrasound, a pocket-sized ultrasound device, is the size and shape of an electric shaver.
Researchers at the U.S.-based Butterfly Network developed the device to work by emitting sound waves and capturing echoes into the body.
Often, sound waves are generated by vibrating crystals. However, the machine used 9,000 tiny drums etched on semiconductor chips, the MIT Technical Review reports.
Earlier this year, Butterfly Network Chief Medical Officer John Martin found a lump in his throat while testing the device.
Martin's throat has always had an uncomfortable feeling. He uses a device connected to a smartphone to get black and gray images.
He found a 3 cm mass that was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer that develops in the outer layers of the skin.
Martin said: "This device allows you to do anything by the bed: you can take it out of your pocket to scan the whole body."
